Hamas Tries to Take Advantage of Lull in Peace Talks

-- Netanyahu urges PA to continue with peace process

JERUSALEM – The Iranian-backed Palestinian terror organization Hamas has made clear it intends using the current lull in the Israeli-Palestinian Authority (PA) peace talks as an opportunity to regain strength in the Palestinian territories.

The Palestinian Authority must turn its back on the negotiations with Israel instead of working on reconciliation with Hamas, one of the movement’s leading lawmakers Ahmed Bahar said on Saturday .

Tens of thousands gathered in Gaza for Hamas and Islamic Jihad rallies on Oct. 1

“He supported reconciliation in its capacity as a national, political, humanitarian, and social necessity,” Hamas’ website Palestine-Info quoted Bahar as saying.

Hamas, whose charter calls for the destruction of Israel and instructs Palestinians to “kill the Jews will continue its terror attacks against Israeli civilians, the movement’s Damascus-based leader Khaled Mashal said in a CNN interview on Sept. 27.

"Why does the international community get upset when we kill illegal settlers on our land?” he said, after a series of shooting incidents that left four Israeli civilians dead and several others wounded.

Palestinian terrorists have fired thousands of rockets from Gaza aimed at Israeli homes since Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza in 2005. For the last five years there have not been any Israeli settlements or settlers in Gaza. However, Iran has continued during this period to arm, fund and train Hamas.  Meanwhile, Hamas has worked to turn Gaza into a Sharia run area.

Egypt destroyed 20 tunnels in September used to smuggle weapons and terrorists in and out of Gaza, the German news agency DPA reported on Oct. 2 .

Hamas joined forces with Islamic Jihad on Oct. 1 to stage rallies around Gaza protesting against the Palestinian-Israeli parley. The Islamic Jihad leaders Muhammad Al-Batsh and Muhmmad Al-Hindi told their audience that resistance – a byword for violence – was the only way to “liberate Palestine .”

Israel, the United States and the more moderate Arab states believe the only way for peace to reign and for the Palestinians to gain a state of their own is via the negotiating table.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged his Palestinian interlocutors to continue with the process in order to reach agreement within a year, despite the resumption of Israeli construction work in West Bank
settlements.

“For 17 years the Palestinians conducted direct talks with Israeli governments as building was ongoing in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank)…I hope that now too they won’t turn away from peace,” Netanyahu said in a statement on Oct. 2.
