Movie Reviews From A Christian Perspective
Kite Runner, The
Not Dove Family-Approved
Synopsis:
Based on Khaled Hosseini's best-selling novel about Amir, a
well-to-do Pashtun boy from Afghanistan, who is still haunted by the guilt of
betraying his childhood friend Hassan, son of a family servant. Having lived in
California for a number of years, Amir returns home to Afghanistan to help
Hassan, when his son gets into trouble.
Dove Worldview:
This is a moving and touching drama, with themes of loyalty and
friendship, of dealing with betrayal and ultimately doing the right thing. The
movie deals with the topic of death as well. The film is nicely directed and it
is a quality production with nice cinematography and good acting. The actor who
portrays young Amir, Zekeria Ebrahimi, gives an excellent performance as does
Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada, who plays his loyal friend Hassan. Khalid Abdalla plays
the adult Amir and he is the centerpiece of the film and does a nice job in
holding the picture together as he is in a lot of scenes.
It was nice to see a very bad guy get his comeuppance near the end
of the movie. There is a pleasant twist in the story near the end with the adult
Amir making a noble decision. We want to note that much of the drama takes place
in the middle east and Allah is mentioned as the supreme being. There are two
misuses of the Lord's name which is taken in vain, and we therefore cannot award
our Dove "Family-Approved" Seal to the film as a family-friendly picture.
Sex: It is mentioned that a character had a child by
his servant's wife; a soldier attempts to have sex with a married woman but
he is stopped.
Language: GD-2; P-2
Violence: A young boy is raped but it is not shown; there are a
couple of cutaway shots so that the viewer realizes what is going on; there
is a scene of blood dripping onto the snow as the boy walks away; a woman is
stoned but just a little blood is seen on the blanket she was wrapped in; a
donkey's head is seen and its blood is applied to a tree for luck; a man is
struck in the eye from a slingshot's stone; a man is beaten but escapes.
Drugs: Drinking in a few scenes and a scene with smoking.
Nudity: Cleavage.
Other: Some boys are called "faggots". Allah's judgment is mentioned.
