Dove Worldview:
“Over Her Dead Body” is a comedy about a jealous ghost.
After being killed on her wedding day in a somewhat
comical freak accident, Kate finds herself stuck on
earth as a ghost, unable to enter heaven until she
completes a mission. She assumes that her mission is to
stop her almost-husband from falling in love with
another woman, Ashley, who happens to be a psychic and
the only person who can see and talk to Kate. Kate goes
to ridiculous and often humorous lengths, using her
supernatural abilities, to sabotage the budding
relationship. Although it has some funny moments,
including some good physical comedy, the laughs fall
flat much of the time. I only found myself laughing out
loud two or three times throughout the entire movie.
There is some sexual innuendo, and an unmarried couple
stay in the same hotel room on a weekend getaway, and
the sex is implied rather than shown. In one scene, a
woman asks a man if he believes in heaven, and when he
says he’s not sure, she basically says that the world
would be a sad place without heaven. Ashley also goes to
her priest and asks him to get rid of Kate’s ghost. The
priest performs an exorcism in her apartment, and when
it’s over, Ashley sincerely promises him that she will
start attending church again on a regular basis; she is
then shown at church in a later scene. However, due to
the strong language and sexual content, “Over Her Dead
Body” cannot receive our Dove "Family-Approved" Seal.
