UNEQUALLY YOKED:
The Bible warns of this type of relationship
By Kenneth Lewis
Since you became a Christian, have you ever dated some one or were you ever in a relationship with someone who was not a Christian? Bible describes this as being "unequally yoked."
Perhaps you’re concerned for a friend or loved one that’s in a situation like that today.
The partnership between a Christian and a nonbeliever is one which the Apostle Paul strongly warns against (II Corinthians
6:14 ).
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness and what communion hath light with darkness? 2 Corinthians
6:14 (KJV)
Yet, thousands of Christians around the world still enter in that type of relationship and lay awake at night tormented with problems they face.
The hunger for contact, companionship or a relationship can plague so heavily that God' perspective can be lost. I remember a long time ago a girl telling me, "All my Christian friends say not to get involved with him, but she replied I can't let him go...he's kind and has everything I want, and I know he loves me, so why not?"
It's not possible for me to list all the reasons "why not?" But there are two keys reasons why we should help our brothers and sisters over come, this type of temptation; obedience and trust.
Rest assured that God knows what’s best for you. Let the Holy Spirit lead you into an obedient walk with Christ, whether or not you really see the dangers of being unequally yoked. Trust that Christ will not deprive you of something good: He wants to prepare you for something far better down the path! Be faithful to Him and trust Him. He knows what’s best for you! He's saying to you now, "I know the plans I have for you...plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a very bright future. Jeremiah 29:11." (KJV)
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)
Only His eyes can see the pitfalls of a future you will have with an unbeliever. If you are tempted, surrender to His will right now. I know it’s not easy but Christians should not be in a relationship with a non believer…That type of relationship will not work! Many problems arise from a believer being in a relationship with a non believer. Their lifestyles are completely different from one another. One is walking in the light and the other is walking in the darkness and if the believer is not careful the one walking in darkness will cause them to walk in the darkness also.
You see, that is why Paul said don’t be unequally yoked. You see the one living in darkness needs to be changed first by accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and then together you can grow in the Lord as equally yoked. Your relationship will stand a better chance of surviving for years to come according to Gods word.
Father: Thank you for your wisdom in your word about living in a good and healthy Christian relationship. We pray for that person Lord that is in that unequal relationship today. We pray if they have not committed themselves that you give them strength and wisdom to do the right thing and to wait until they can be equally yoked. We pray that you guide them along their journey with you and they put their full trust in you to bring that special person into their life. In Jesus name, amen
